Aiia Maarsarwe’s sister reveals moment she knew Israeli student was dead

Heartbreaking details

The devastated sister of Aiia Maasarwe has revealed the moment she knew the 21-year-old Israeli student was dead.

Noor Maasarwe says her sister, Aiia often feared for her life while walking home at night in the Melbourne suburb of Bundoora.

Every night, Aiia would call her sister as she walked home on the dark stretch of road where Aiia’s body was found. Noor says she found out her sister has been killed when she watched the news.

“I [saw] in the news that they found a body,” Noor told Nine News on Sunday. “They didn’t say who it was.

“But it matches all the details. It was on the same road. Everything. I was just praying that it’s not her. But then I saw the shoes and her phone … and I was sure it was her.”

Aiia’s alleged killer, aspiring rapper Codey Herrmann, 20, faced court today. He is charged with one count of murder and one count of rape after Aiia’a half-naked body was found near the Polaris Shopping Centre, in Bundoora, on the morning of Jan. 17. She had been on the way home from a comedy gig the previous night when she was attacked.

Aiia’s other sister Ruba was having a FaceTime phone call with her when Aiia suddenly dropped the phone.

“We spoke about the stand-up comedy she saw and when we would next meet,” Ruba told Israeli TV station Channel 13.

“Suddenly, I heard her scream. I heard vehicles in the background of the call like there was a phone on the floor.

“There was no sign during the conversation of the horror about to happen.

“I heard her screaming and screaming and then the call was cut off.’”
