As Americans celebrate Thanksgiving today, YouTube’s Binging with Babish is recreating one of the most iconic Thanksgiving recipes of all times: Rachel Green’s trifle-shepherd’s pie mash-up from Friends.
The sweet-savoury abomination comes about when two pages of her magazine get stuck together, resulting in: “A layer of ladyfingers, a layer of jam, custard (made from scratch), raspberries, more ladyfingers, beef sautéed with peas and onions, a little more custard, sliced banana and whipped cream,” causing Ross to exclaim, “It tastes like feet!”
Joey, on the other hand, isn’t too bothered:
After making his custard and minced beef filling from scratch Binging’s host Andrew Rea bravely goes in for a spoonful, declaring: “Does it taste like feet? No. But it tastes like ground beef, custard and bananas, so it’s absolutely disgusting.” Andrew’s whole channel is devoted to recreating recipes from film and television shows – and they’re not all heinous beef and banana creations. We’re talking the Big Kahuna Burger from Pulp Fiction andpumpkin pasties from Harry Potter. Yep, you’ll get sucked into a vortex of fictional foods.
Andrew’s not the only man mad enough to have tackled the trifle, either. A quick search comes up with countless attempts. Food & Wine even went so far as to publish the recipe for a savoury version, subbing parsnip chips for the sliced banana, cornbread for the ladyfingers, cranberry jelly for the jam, roasted beets for the raspberries and mashed potato for the custard. It almost sounds edible.
If you fancy a bit of Thanksgiving action at home this week, may we steer you to one of these classic recipes instead? We’re talking glossy roast turkey with cranberry and pecan stuffing, and pumpkin pie with maple cream.
But if you really want to try Rachel's trifle, here's the video:
Don't say you haven't been warned.
