ALDI has opened four new ‘ALDI Local’ stores in the UK - prompting experts to believe they could roll out the smaller mini marts to the rest of the world.
The new stores are a lot smaller than their ALDI big sisters, with around 300 fewer products and items that are less bulky and easier for people-on-the-run to take home.
The stores have been likened to convenience stores and have a focus on ready-made meals and cold prepared meals - as well as familiar, essential products that ALDI shoppers will know and love.
Adds ALDI: “The main difference is that it doesn’t sell bulkier items that shoppers would have difficulty transporting without a car.’
TCC global insights director Bryan Roberts recently toured Aldi Local in London and told Grocery Dive it was ‘a pleasure to navigate and shop.’
He adds: ‘The main tweaks seem to be a focus on smaller pack-sizes and formats and the exclusion of general merchandise.’

Another expert Bill Bishop adds that there’s little doubt that the new ALDI Local stores will move into the US, leading some to wonder if Australia will also be home to the mini marts as well.
'The store embraces the same operating and merchandising principles as their larger stores and stays true to the emphasis on ultra-low prices,' he told Grocery Dive.
