Many fellow Markdown Addicts were quick to congratulate Britteny on her super Ben & Jerry’s haul.
Said one: ‘You are my hero. Best score ever!😍’ Added another: ‘Very jealous, enjoy!!’
Revealed a third: ‘I don't know if it's a good thing or bad thing, too much ice cream, if it was in my fridge it would all go in 2minutes lol🤣🤣🤣 good score!’
Ha! However some were a little wary of eating the non-dairy Ben & Jerry’s, given that they were out of date.
Said one follower: ‘Out of date tho ..yuk.’ Added another: ‘I thought u can’t eat frozen product 3 months after best b4 ?’
Said a third: ‘Use by and best before dates are there for a reason... i just think its yuk and thats generally the reason for big cheap things like this ...i don’t have to agree...if people wanna eat things after those dates thats sweet as for them they can go for it.’
Britteny, however, maintained that the ice creams tasted fine - and were able to be consumed well past their best before dates.
‘Most things with best before I find still taste the same :),’ she wrote, adding: ‘Best before fine to eat after date. Use by you can sometimes go up to 5+ days past! Not always accurate :) they taste fine.’
Added another follower: ‘Stop letting a date rule.. most products are good for min a few weeks after date. It also depends if its use by or best before.’
According to the CSIRO, foods labelled with a ‘best before’ date don’t pose a health risk if eaten past the date, it’s more that the quality of the product may be compromised.
‘The term "Use by" is specifically for foods that will have a food- safety risk after a specified storage period,’ the health body says. ‘The term "Best before" applies to all other food products.’
