When it comes to picking a baby name, parents are searching in the most bizarre places to draw inspiration. And, although some classic names still remain popular, there are some seriously quirky names gaining traction.
The 100 most popular baby names of 2018 have been revealed, and the results are very surprising.
Sophia and Jackson have remained in the top spots, coming in as the number one girls and boys name for the past several years.
And while classic names still make up the top picks, names inspired by popular video game Fortnite, fruit, vegetables and the Kardashians have all risen in popularity this year.
Put together by popular parenting site Baby Center, the data was collected by asking a total of 742,000 parents what they named their baby in 2018.
Joining Sophia in the top five girl’s names were Olivia, Emma, Ava and Isabella, while Liam, Noah, Aiden and Caden were the most popular among boys.
Linda Murray, Baby Center’s global editor-in-chief said: “Sophia is the dominant girls’ name of the decade, with no signs of slowing down.”
She added: “It has worldwide appeal, it’s pronounceable in multiple languages, and it’s feminine and sophisticated all at once.
“As for Jackson, it’s a modern twist on the old classic Jack.”
The parenting site also analysed trends in baby names, and noted that the Kardashian family has influenced a lot of names.
The name Stormi, which Kylie Jenner named her daughter, rose by 63 per cent. The name Dream, which Rob Kardashian gave to his daughter, rose by 42 per cent.
Similarly, Saint and Reign, names given to Kim Kardashian and sister Kourtney Kardashian’s children, rose by 42 per cent and 27 per cent respectively.
Baby Center also noted an increase in food inspired names.
The name Kale went up by 35 per cent, Kiwi was up 40 per cent, and Maple was up 32 per cent.
Names inspired by the popular video game Fortnite have also crept up the rungs including Ramirez which is up 57 per cent for boys, Leviathan which is up 46 per cent for boys and Bunny, up 30 per cent for girls.
