ALDI and Coles have announced that they will increase the price of their milk in all supermarkets in support of the nation’s embattled dairy farmers.
Both chains announced the move on Tuesday night, following in Woolworths footsteps from several weeks ago.
In a statement, Coles said: “Coles is currently paying dairy processors the highest farm gate milk prices in four years, without passing on the added expense to customers. However it is clear that many dairy farmers, particularly in New South Wales and Queensland, are struggling as a result of drought.'
ALDI meanwhile took to Facebook to announce: ‘ALDI will increase the price of our milk tomorrow in support of Australia's dairy farmers. ‘The price of our 2L and 3L Farmdale fresh milk, will increase by 20 cents and 30 cents respectively. This decision reflects extensive discussions with our milk processors who have worked with us to find a way to pass on the additional proceeds, in full, to the dairy farmers supplying them with fresh milk.
‘ALDI has also accepted its own cost increases from our milk processors, which we didn’t pass on to our customers.’
As a result, the lowest price milk in ALDI and Coles will cost $2.20 for two litres and $3.30 for three litres. The new prices will be effective as of tomorrow in ALDI, and in the coming days for Coles.
The move has been praised far and wide by shoppers.
‘Good on you ALDI,’ said one shopper. ‘I for one am more than happy to pay more to support our farmers.’
Said another: ‘I’ve been buying my milk from Woolies for the last few weeks as a show of support, and I’m happy to see the other supermarkets follow suit. It’s a great thing they’ve done.’
