However their efforts were in vain, with the young mum later suffering a heart attack from sustained brain injuries as a result of the choking incident.
Her grief-stricken mother Michelle was at the party and saw the tragic incident unfold, describing her horror at watching her daughter choke on the Jaffa Cakes - a very popular treat in the UK - in front of her eyes during the party challenge.
‘I remember raising my eyebrows when Bethan started the game, thinking, “How old are you?”, and telling her to spit them out,’ Michelle told Metro.
‘So many people have said they play a similar game with marshmallows. Even my 90-year-old aunt said she does it with Maltesers.’
Michelle also spoke of the heartbreaking moment they told Bethan’s three-year-old daughter, Lili, about her mother’s tragic death.
‘I just told her that mummy was very sick and the doctors couldn’t make her better so she has died and we can’t see her again,’ Michele said.
The eating challenge fatality comes after a young woman died during a university challenge, prompting authorities to warn people about the dangers of eating competitions.
