Redfern Convenience Store in Sydney’s inner city has started put a sign up on toilet paper stating that one packet will cost $3.50 - however two packs will cost a whopping $99, a surefire way to stop shoppers from stocking up.
The move went down a treat on social media, with one Twitter user saying it was ‘the best thing I’ve ever seen.’ Said another: ‘This needs to be done everywhere!’
The idea first originated in Denmark where a major supermarket used the technique to curb the hoarding of hand santiser - selling one bottle for $8 each or two bottles for $212 each.
Experts say the tactic worked. Said one: ‘It’s better. If you say “you can only buy one,” people will argue for an exception for their special case. When you put a price on it, no one argues to be able to buy two.’
