If you’ve been struggling to lose pounds in time for swimsuit season, then we have just the news for you!
A new UK study says that eating just 2 tablespoons of cottage cheese before bed helps weight loss, as the low-calorie food actually boosts metabolism - even while you’re in bed.
The research, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, debunks previous thinking that regular late-night snacks increases the risk of weight gain as the body stores the extra food as fat. However nutritionist Professor Michael Ormsbee argues that isn’t the case with high-protein foods such as cottage cheese, saying that two tablespoons of cottage cheese 30 minutes before bed can have enormous health and weight loss benefits.
It is one of the first studies where participants ate whole foods - like cottage cheese - as opposed to a protein shake or supplement, with profound results.
‘Until now, we presumed whole foods would act similarly to the data on supplemental protein, but we had no real evidence,’ Professor Ormsbee, of Florida State University, said: ‘This is important because it adds to the body of literature that indicates whole foods work just as well as protein supplementation, and it gives people options for pre-sleep nutrition that go beyond powders and shaker bottles.’
It’s believed that cottage cheese is ideal as a pre-bed snack because it is rich in a protein called casein, which releases slowly into the body - meaning there will be a steady supply of amino acids through the night, which helps the body build muscle and regulating immune function.
And with a tub of cottage cheese costing around $2 at your local supermarket, it’s an easy budget weight loss tool for everyone!
