Experts go on to advise that the longer cooked rice is left out at room temperature, it becomes much more likely that the bacteria will turn toxic. Meaning if you consume it, you can be struck down with food poisoning in the form of vomiting, cramps and diarrhoea. For more, see how guidelines below.
The new health guidelines come after it was recently revealed that a student had died after eating cooked pasta which had been left on the kitchen counter for too long. Moral of the story? Pay attention to storing leftovers.
HOW TO SAFELY CONSUME LEFTOVER RICE
1. If you have leftover rice, make sure you store it in the refrigerator as soon as it has cooled down. This should be done within the hour - do NOT leave the cooked rice on the bench or stove top for more than 60 minutes.
2. Ideally, experts say leftover rice should be eaten by the following day.
3. When reheating rice, make sure it’s steaming all the way through.
4. Experts also say you shouldn't reheat rice twice - so you’ll need to consume all the rice after you’ve reheated it or consume anything leftover.
