When it comes to peeling garlic, we've seen many tips and tricks over the years.
In fact at the New Idea Test Kitchen, we've tried all of them - gently peeling the cloves with a small knife, smashing them with the back of a large knife and even squashing them between two same-size metal bowls. We've even tried rolling a garlic clove inside a silicone glove!
And while they all work, many are fiddly, a little dangerous - you don't want your hand to slip with you're smashing the back of a knife! - and can result in garlic-smelling fingers that last for hours! And if you need to peel a whole head of garlic, you can be stuck for ages working your way through clove after clove with these various methods.
But there's one hack that gets our nod of approval - and there's no fuss, no smell and no waste! You can watch the video above for our fail-proof method, but basically it involves placing a head of garlic on a kitchen bench and pressing down on it with the heel of your hand, placing your weight behind it. Then you place the loosened garlic inside an old jar with a screw top lid, sealing the jar and giving it a good shake for 15-30 seconds.
The result? Garlic cloves that come away from their skin VERY easily, meaning you can get on with your cooking! Couldn't love this more!
