There’s arguably nothing better than a perfectly ripe avocado spread on fresh crunchy bread and a dash of lemon (aka. True blue Aussie avocado toast) but there’s nothing worse than preparing for your favourite recipes and realising that your avo is rock hard. Here’s how to ripen up an avocado ASAP.
How to ripen an avocado
Brown paper bag
In order to trap ethylene gas and speed up the ripening process wrap an avocado in a paper bag and store in a cool dry place.
If you would like to speed up this process add a banana to the bag as bananas release a large amount of ethylene.
Microwave and oven
Unfortunately using a microwave or oven to ripen an avocado is a myth. Heating an avocado is believed to fasten the process but it has not been proven as heating does not increase the production of ethylene.
How to tell when an avocado is ripe
The best way to tell if an avocado is ripe is to press very lightly on the tip of the avocado if it is soft to touch then the fruit is ready to eat. Alternatively, peel back the stem to discover how ripe your avocado is. If the stem is easily removed and the flesh beneath is green then these are all signs that you have a perfectly ripe avocado.
