What is hummus?
Traditionally speaking hummus is a dip made from sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon and chickpeas. It originated from the Middle East but is now eaten by the masses around the world. It’s so popular there is now even an International Hummus Day on May 13th.
What is the correct spelling?
It’s the classic age-old debate, how do you spell this delectable dip is it hummus or houmous? Simon Horobin, Professor of English Language at Magdalen College, Oxford explained to BT, “the reason for the varied spellings is that the word is borrowed into English from Arabic.”
“Since Arabic uses a different writing system, there is no single way of transliterating the Arabic word into English” he continued.
So really the jury's out on this one so it’s up to you, we’re opting for hummus but you’ll notice a couple of our recipes use the traditional spelling.
As mentioned, hummus is a great source of fat and plant-based protein which makes it a great snack for vegans and vegetarians. It also contains omega-3s, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc.
Between two to four tbsp of hummus is recommended each day. If you’re purchasing hummus from the store opt for original rather than low-fat and flavoured varieties which have added chemicals.
