The budget store has started adding self-service checkouts to stores in the UK, with the first one popping up in Aldi at Tamworth, Staffordshire. Aldi says if they prove effective they will be rolled out to other stores.
It will be a relief to some who find the panic of Aldi checkouts - where cashiers are notoriously fast! - a little overwhelming.
‘I’d use them,’ said one Aussie shopper. ‘Sometimes you have to wait at Aldi in the queues or for a new cashier to start up another till, so it would be great just to go to a self checkout especially if you’ve only got a couple of things.’
The news comes on the same day that Coles announced that they were trialling i-Pad-sized cameras at checkouts to combat theft.
The move has been met with some outrage on social media with some shoppers claiming they’re going ‘overboard.’
