Commenting on the awesome Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook group, she writes: ‘I went to Coles at 7:45pm and the deli was in clean up mode with no hot chickens available. I had to ask for the voucher for - 1 week to use it.’
Other shoppers on the page have often sung the praises of heading to supermarkets towards the end of the day, where markdowns are most prevalent and things like hot chooks have already sold out or have been shredded to sell as chicken meat in the deli.
‘I always get my best bargains at the end of the day,’ says one Markdown Addict. Adds another: ‘My advice to anyone wanting a bargain is to head to your local supermarket at the end of the day - as close to closing time as possible. Anything that’s at their best before date is going to get seriously marked down.’
And you just might land yourself a free hot chook! Many members are quick to point out that only Coles store that display the sign hand out the free chicken vouchers - while others say it’s Coles policy across all stores. Either way? It’s definitely worth asking!
The Coles move prompted other bargain hunters to point out another savvy hot chicken trick at Woolworths - which could get you a big discount off your next chook.
It’s been revealed that Woolies staff have to reduce any chicken that’s been on display for more than four hours - usually by as much as 30% - all you have to do is ask.
