KFC isn’t known for doing things by halves. Whether it’s releasing fried chicken-scented bath bombs in Japan or launching this supremely cheesy Ultimate “Big” Cheese Burger to an adoring Australian public, the masters of fried bird frequently go where other fast-food outlets fear to tread.
A case in point is the Double Down, which first appeared in Australia in 2011 and has popped up on numerous occasions since. The Double took the ‘burger’ concept to the next level by replacing the bread component with two fried chicken fillets, sandwiching bacon, cheese and sauce.

And now, this calorific creation has been given a North American twist with the release of the KFC Waffle Double Down. Available only in Canada, the sandwich is “billed as a spin on the classic American chicken and waffles,” according to Mashable.
The Waffle Double Down takes two juicy chicken fillets and wraps them around a fat Belgian waffle, which is drizzled with Canadian maple syrup aioli. It sounds to us like it’s walking a mighty fine tightrope between heaven and hell.
This salty-sweet beast is only available for a short time, so Canadians are already make wise life choices, like Instagram user @mikidy_, who ditched the gym in favour of this finger-licking feast:
Naturally, south of the border Americans are a bit miffed that they’re missing out.

There are currently no plans to bring this bad boy down under, so you could try and improvise by taking the fried chicken from these burgers, the waffles from this recipe, and adding a drizzle of maple syrup to your favourite aioli. Godspeed, people.
