In a heartbreaking announcement for staff and shoppers, Kmart has announced the closure of one of its most-loved stores after nearly 40 years.
Kmart Northcote Plaza in Melbourne will shut its doors for good on November 22 when the store’s lease ends.
The announcement has come as a shocking blow to locals, who have loved having a Kmart on their doorstep since they first opening their doors in 1981.
‘I can’t deal. I’m in shock,’ wrote one. Added another: ‘This is my favourite Kmart, so devastated.’
Said a third: ‘Anyone else feel like crying? I love this store, the staff are always so lovely. So sad.’
It’s the latest in a long line of store closures haunting Australian retailers in recent times. In recent weeks, Collete by Collete Hayman and Jeanswest both went into voluntary administration, while Harris Scarfe and Bardot have both collapsed.
