Who doesn’t love a good custard tart, eh? They’re an Aussie institution, with crispy pastry on the bottom and delicious, gooey custard on top. YUM!
But while they can be a little bit time consuming to make from scratch, one fabulous home chef has come up with a ingenius way to make them quickly and easily - with cracking results - in a $29 Kmart pie maker!
Yes, you read that right! Custard Tart fan Jenny took to the Kmart Pie Maker Recipes, Tips and Ideas Australia Facebook page to reveal her clever recipe for the yummy treat, and we couldn’t love it more.
She writes: ‘Custard tarts! They worked first try!! so quick and easy. Was really happy how they turned out!’
Revealing how she makes them, Jenny says she uses puff pastry, 500ml ready made custard - she uses the Coles long life one - 1 beaten egg, 1/2 cap vanilla essence and a pinch of nutmeg.
Jenny adds: ‘Blind bake puff pastry from cold for 4 mins. Mix custard, eggs and vanilla together. Add custard mixture to pastry and cook for 8 minutes or until custard is firm. Sprinkle with nutmeg.’
Simple as that? And another bonus - they’re gluten-free, which was a big bonus for Jenny.
She writes: ‘I feel like I've been missing them so long decided to give them a try.. So pleased with how they turned out!
‘[I used] the Coles gluten free pastry.. It goes slightly brown.. Then goes browner in the further baking.. They'll still look a little soft after the blind bake. But crispen up later!’
Not surprisingly, the recipes got the big tick of approval from the awesome group’s other members.
‘Now they look like a custard tart, my favourite. 😁’ wrote one. Added another: ‘Yummy 😋!! Get in my tummy!’
Said a third: ‘These look amazing, I am definitely trying!’
