The study saw 1000 people - 500 women and 500 men - rate a wide range of foods on a six-point scale as to how much they liked and disliked each.
They were then asked to do four different personality quizzes to ascertain their levels of emotional stability, aggression and ‘everyday sadism’ - meaning they had to how much they agreed with statements such as 'I enjoy tormenting people' and 'Given enough provocation, I may hit someone'.
And researchers say the results we clear.
'General bitter taste preferences emerged as a robust predictor for Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism and everyday sadism,' the researchers wrote in the journal Appetite.
While the scientists couldn’t explain why people who like tonic may have psychopathic tendencies, they did suggest that they may experience ‘a thrill’ like a ‘rollercoaster ride’ from drinking and eating particularly bitter things.
'We found particularly robust correlations with everyday sadism,' study author Christina Sagioglou revealed.
Maybe it’s time to switch to gin and soda, right?!
