Meghan could face a shock tax bill after the royal wedding

We didn't see this one coming

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are set to tie the knot in the wedding of the year on May 19 at Windsor Castle.

But, Meghan may be forced to pay tax on the cost of her wedding.

Financial experts say the former actress could be hit with a huge bill by tax officials in the US if parts of the wedding are seen as a taxable benefit.

Meghan’s net worth is estimated at $7.1 million, which includes acting fees and sponsorships deals.

At this stage it is unsure whether the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) would attempt to make Meghan pay tax on the wedding.

But the US is one of the few countries which taxes citizens based on citizenship not residency.

‘If you are a US citizen, you are a US taxpayer, no matter where you live,’ tax adviser, Stephanie Heilborn told Express.

This means Meghan would be liable to pay US tax on her worldwide income at the same rate as someone who lives and works in America.
