Meghan Markle breaks royal protocol with comment on abortion laws

Royal family members must remain 'neutral.'

Before entering royal life, Meghan Markle was an outspoken advocate for all things female rights and empowerment. Since becoming the Duchess of Sussex following her May 19 wedding to Prince Harry, the duchess has had to keep quiet on her political stance, as to remain ‘neutral.’

But, while on a tour of Ireland, Meghan seemingly broke royal protocol and made a comment on the countries abortion laws.

A now-deleted tweet from an Irish senator claims Meghan was ‘pleased’ with the results of Ireland’s recent abortion referendum, which moved to legalise abortion, The Irish Times reports.

While attending a garden party at the British Ambassador’s residence, Meghan reportedly discussed Ireland’s recent referendum with Catherine Noone, a senator of the Fine Gael political party.

Noone wrote about the conversation in since-deleted tweets: ‘The Duchess & I had a chat about the recent referendum result — she watched with interest & was pleased to see the result.’

Noone followed up with a second now-deleted tweet that stated: ‘I should say she seemed pleased — she was interested and very measured, not political at all.’

Meghan’s official biography page embraces her history of standing up for women’s rights. It even explicitly mentions the campaign against sexist language in advertising that she led as a young girl and her role as UN Women’s Advocate for Political Participation and Leadership.
