Mother dies in Bali hospital while on her second honeymoon

Despite family's desperate effort to raise $217,000 to bring her home.

A New Zealand mother has died in a Bali hospital despite her family’s desperate attempts to bring her home after her insurance company and the government were unable to help.

Abby Hartley, a mother-of-two, was rushed to hospital in Indonesia last month after experiencing severe pain while on a second honeymoon.

Following her hospitalisation, a Givealittle page was launched to raise money for hospital expenses and a $137,000 bill to bring her home on a medical evacuation flight. Ms Hartley’s condition was too unstable to travel on a commercial flight and she would have needed a specialised aircraft with attendant care to get to New Zealand.

Ms Hartley had been taken to the ICU at BIMC hospital Nusa Dua where she underwent surgery after it was discovered she had a twisted bowel.

She was later placed into an induced coma after suffering acute respiratory distress syndrome. Ms Hartley had also developed septicemia.

Ms Hartley developed an infection after her condition further deteriorated and she had fluid on her lungs, one of which had collapsed.

Ms Hartley passed away on Monday.

On social media, friends and family paid tribute to Ms Hartley.

‘Abby, you are and always will be a beautiful soul and a wonderful light in my life. You have given me such sound advice in the years that I have had the privilege of knowing you,’ one wrote.
