Launching in the US later this month, Dylan’s trio of Heaven’s Door whiskeys includes a straight rye, a straight bourbon and a double-barrel whiskey. The musician and whisky aficionado has teamed up with distilling master Marc Bushala to launch the all-American spirits.
“We both wanted to create a collection of American whiskeys that, in their own way, tell a story,” Dylan told The New York Times. “I’ve been traveling for decades, and I’ve been able to try some of the best spirits that the world of whiskey has to offer. This is great whiskey.”
Bushala and his team were tasked with interpreting Dylan’s sometimes-vague descriptions (“It should feel like being in a wood structure”) and turning them into top-shelf whiskeys, which they achieved by judicious toasting of the barrels.
There’s a bit of typical Dylan trippyness to the labels, too, which are inspired by Dylan’s own ironwork sculptures.
“Gates appeal to me because of the negative space they allow. They can shut you out or shut you in. And in some ways there is no difference,” says Dylan on the Heaven’s Door website. Alrighty then.
At the age of 76, and with more than 50 years of music under his belt, it would seem that the Nobel Prize-winning crooner has been sowing the seed for this new venture for decades. His love affair with whiskey is writ large across his discography with tracks such as Moonshiner, One for the Road, Bourbon Street, and his take on Copper Kettle in 1970, which pays homage to the distilling process. Dylan’s Bootleg Series of live recordings now runs to 13 albums.
And he shows no signs of slowing just yet, with a Heaven’s Door Distillery slated to open in Nashville in 2019. Pre-orders are now open for the Tennessee Bourbon and Double Barrel Whiskey for US$60 (AU$80) and the Straight Rye Whiskey for US$90 (AU$120).
