It’s the hack the whole world is talking about - and it’s one you’ll be thanking your lucky stars for next time there’s a power outage.
The brainchild of a savvy US mum, it involves placing a 10 cent piece on top of a frozen cup of water and keeping it your freezer.
Why? Because annoying power outages - which can happen in wild weather, heavy storms or extreme heat - mean you can be without a fridge and freezer for quite some time.
It’s often hard to know when this happens whether the food in your freezer and fridge is safe to consume once the power is back on - and that’s where this clever hack comes in.
Start by filling a cup with water and placing it in the freezer - once it’s frozen, place a 10 cent piece on top of it and place it back in the freezer.
If you get a power outage, you can see how badly your frozen and refrigerated food has been affected by this cup. If the 10 cent piece has sunk to the bottom of the cup, then it’s no longer safe to consume. But if it’s still sitting on top of the ice, then chances are it’s A-OK!
