NRL star Jarryd Hayne charged with aggravated sexual assault

He has been released on bail.

NRL star Jarryd Hayne has been released on bail after being charged with the aggravated sexual assault of a woman he allegedly met online.

The 30-year-old handed himself in to police yesterday afternoon and was arrested by members of the NSW Sex Crimes Squad in relation to an allegation made against him.

The NRL star was questioned for more than nine-and-a-half hours by officers.

“Earlier this month, detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation after receiving reports a woman had been sexually assaulted by a man she met on social media,” police said in a statement.

The alleged incident occurred on September 30, the night of the NRL Grand Final.

“Police will allege in court that the man attended a home in the Hunter region on Sunday 30 September 2018, and sexually assaulted a 26-year-old woman,” the statement said.

Hayne is set to face Burwood Local Court next month.

The charge of aggravated sexual assault carries a maximum prison term of 20 years.

Hayne is yet to formally comment on the incident.
