Pickles can be polarising at the best of times, but even the most committed pickle fan may be scratching their heads at the latest slushie flavour to come out of the United States. This June, the Sonic burger chain is launching a pickle juice slush, a sweet-tangy icy treat in a fluorescent green hue.
As much as we’d love to report back from the front line on this, we’ll have to leave it to the good folks at Food & Wine, who had the pleasure of previewing this brand-spanking beverage.
Food & Wine writer Maria Yagoda states that bright-green pickle juice slush is “surprisingly delicious … Sweet and tangy, the bright brine compensates for the over-savouriness you might have been worried about.”
“You won’t understand why, but you’ll keep going back for more sips, likely until it’s all gone,” says Maria.
Her only gripe is that the slush may, in fact, be a tad too sweet, “as if overcorrecting for the acidity, but maybe this is what has to happen for America to acclimate to – and embrace – pickle-flavoured soft drink.”
Once the pickle syrup is rolled out in June, it can be added to anything on the Sonic menu, from burgers to shakes – why anyone would want a squirt of pickle juice in their milkshake is beyond us, but hey, whatever floats your pickle-loving boat.
If you want to recreate some pickle-flavoured drink action back home, may we suggest a Pickle Back cocktail, which blends a shot each of whisky and the juice from a jar of pickles? Or have a go at making your own pickled cucumbers, cherries or peaches to serve with cheese and cured meats.
