Describing the occasion as equal parts “overwhelming” and “moving,” the King said he felt “extremely well received” as thousands of Danes flooded the streets of Copenhagen to celebrate his ascension.

“It was one of the most amazing things to experience in my life,” he added.

His doting wife and Queen also spoke of the immense pride she felt for her husband, who had waited 55 years to ascend to the throne.

“It was a beautiful moment. I was both very happy and very proud.”

Though they were not crowned in a coronation service as the British royals would, the new monarchs did have a proclamation of the new reign by the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen instead.
