We finally have our first look at royal bride Princess Eugenie’s wedding dress as she arrived at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle to wed Jack Brooksbank.
But how does her gown compare to her mum’s Sarah ‘Fergie’ Ferguson’s dress when she wed Prince Andrew in 1986?
According to fashion expert Donny Galella, there are distinct similarities between Eugenie’s dress and that of Fergie’s.
Eugenie, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth, 28, arrived at her ceremony in to St George’s Chapel in a 1977 Rolls Royce Phantom VI, accompanied by her father, His Royal Highness The Duke of York, wearing a dress designed by British-based Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos.
Fergie, the Duchess of York, married Prince Andrew in 1986 in an over-the-top fairytale ceremony wearing bespoke dress by unknown London designer, Lindka Cierach.
Bumblebees and thistles were also embroidered onto gown as a nod to represent her family’s crest.
Fergie wore the York Diamond Tiara at her wedding. The sparkler was commissioned for Fergie as a gift rom Queen Elizabeth.
Featuring a scooped neckline and fitted bodice, the silk ivory gown’s unconventional design was a first for any royal bride.
The gown also featured the letter ‘A’ (for her now-ex husband Andrew) secretly embroidered on the 5 metre train.
Eugenie’s dress also included a number of symbols that are meaningful to Princess Eugenie as motifs, including a thistle for Scotland acknowledging the couple’s fondness for Balmoral, a Shamrock for Ireland as a nod to the bride’s Ferguson family, and the York Rose and ivy representing the couple’s home.
Eugenie also wore the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, made in 1919 in the fashionable “kokoshnik” style popularised in the Russian Imperial Court, which has been lent to her by the Queen.
‘I feel she’s channeling her mums dress just a little bit. From the back it reminds me of Fergie’s wedding dress,’ Donny told New Idea, of Eugenie’s gown.
‘From the front, I like the bottom of the dress and the simplicity, no beading or lace (just like Meghan).
‘I am not a huge fan of the sailor collar and very surprised there is no veil. Nice simple bouquet and hair make up looks natural.
‘She has cleverly matched the emerald earrings to her tiara.’
