Jaffle (noun, Australian): A toasted sandwich, the edges of which have been sealed during toasting in such a way as to create a pocket for filling.
An Adelaide couple have created an eye-catching new cafe inside the chassis of a bright yellow 11-metre long school bus, dishing out gourmet jaffles and coffee.
Come down to the Wizard of Oz in Sand, spend the day by the beach we'll sort out your coffee and lunch! Created by lifelong foodies, Sascha and Brydie Wrede, Old School Bus tours along the Adelaide coastline, regularly stopping at Christies Beach, Port Noarlunga, Moana and Aldinga as well as markets and events.
“Everywhere we take the bus people stop, stare and reminisce about catching a yellow bus to school; their eyes glaze over slightly and you often see the hint of a smile on their lips,” explains the Old School Bus Facebook page.
“Then when they find out we have converted her (of course she is a girl) into a food truck the smiles turn into massive grins.”
Inside, customers can sit on the original vinyl seat and peruse the menu filled with themed item names like “The Schoolyard Bully”, “The Bus Driver’s Breakfast”, and “Too Cool For School.”
Sourcing as much as they can from local producers, Old School Bus’ jaffle fillings offer a gourmet twist on the nostalgic comfort food.
We’d love to try the slow cooked chipotle pulled beef brisket served with lime and coriander crème fraiche, or their speciality – bacon, gorgonzola and caramelised onion.
