As Meghan Markle settles into royal life, the royal rules that the newly minted Duchess of Sussex must follow have been revealed.
The rigid rules, some of which are based on traditional etiquette rules and others on the Queen’s personal likes and dislikes, don’t apply to the whole royal family.
Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice have far more freedom.
Below are all the rules Meghan Markle has to follow that Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice don’t.
Dark nail polish
While Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are free to choose whatever nail polish they please, Meghan is expected to wear light and neutral shades.
Town and Country reported that Essie’s Ballet Slippers is a favorite color of the Queen’s and while it’s not the only color Meghan can use, she’s expected to stick to nude and pink shades.
Kate Middleton has been held to a similar standard.
Strict clothing rules
While married to Prince Harry, Meghan is expected to dress modestly.
The Sun reports that the Queen has a strict ‘no knees’ policy, meaning a woman’s knees should never be exposed.
Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are expected to dress somewhat modestly, but aren’t held to the same standards as Meghan or Kate. The two tend to freely sport outfits with shorter hemlines and sleeves.
Both princesses are usually scrutinised for their bold fashion choices.
Social media
Before marrying Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was a prominent social media personality – even running her own blog The Tig. Before the announcement of her engagement to the royal, Meghan shut down all her social media presence.
However, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are permitted to have their own social media accounts.
Princess Eugenie has an Instagram account, which she uses to post about causes she cares about, events she attends, and photos of herself and her family.
No bare legs
While Meghan Markle is forbidden from baring her legs without hosiery on, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are free to let their skin show.
