There was shopper chaos at one busy Woolworths store today after multiple meat fridges broke down.
A customer contacted New Idea Food to reveal that the fridge breakdown meant that eight shelves were completely bare and had been for several hours, leading to panic amongst fellow shoppers at the Engadine store in NSW.
‘I couldn’t believe it, it was like the apocalypse,’ said the shopper. ‘I walked in and thought “What’s going on here?” The fridges all felt cold, but they were completely bare. Four long shelves and four short shelves, totally empty.
‘No signs up saying what was wrong, so I asked the lady at the counter and she said they were all broken and they didn’t know what was going on.
‘I guess that’s one way to go vegetarian!
‘Other shoppers were all walking around trying to work out what was going on, it was one hell of a kerfuffle. One old bloke said to me: “Well I guess I’m not having meat for my tea tonight.”
‘It was chaos, I’ve never seen anything like it - so many shelves, just bare.’
Photos taken by the shopper reveal just how empty the fridges were - with a smaller selected of meat items available in the butcher section and one smaller fridge.
A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed to New Idea Food that two fridges were currently being repaired and would be up and running later tonight.
But while the spokesperson said all product remains available, the shopper disagreed.
‘There was hardly anything,’ she told New Idea Food.
