1 tbsp olive oil
3 onions, sliced
350ml hot stock
1 tsp marmite
Pinch of five-spice powder
Heat a saucepan and add 1 tbsp olive oil and 20g butter. Tip in 3 medium onions, sliced, and cook on medium for about 10 mins until soft and beginning to brown.
Stir in a pinch of five-spice powder (you can use Worcestershire sauce instead if you like) and 1 rounded tbsp flour and gradually add 350ml hot stock (made with boiling water and 1 tsp Marmite) stirring as you go.
Bring to the boil, then turn the heat right down and simmer for 5 mins. Season if necessary before serving.
