One of Australia’s most notorious serial killers has launched legal action to secure a release date.
Robert Joe Wagner – who murdered 10 people and was sentenced to 10 consecutive life sentences – lodged an application with the Supreme Court to have his non-parole period set.
The Advertiser reports that Wagner will have his request heard on Monday.
Wagner was arrested in May 1999 after eight bodies hidden in six barrels in a abandoned bank at Snowtown in South Australia. Two more bodies were found just days later at a home in Salisbury North.
Ringleader John Bunting is serving 11 consecutive life sentences, along with other accomplices Mark Haydon and James Vlassakis, who are serving sentences of up to 26 years without parole.
When sentenced by Justice Brian Martin in 2003, Wagner stated: ‘Paedophile’s were doing terrible things to children. The authorities didn’t do anything about it. I decided to take action. I took that action. Thank you.’
