This spaghetti with tomato sauce recipe brings together the fundamentals of classic Italian cooking.
1 large onion, chopped
6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (plus extra for drizzling)
2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes
500g pack spaghetti
8 basil leaves, roughly torn
freshly grated parmesan, to serve
Gently fry the onion in the oil for 10 mins until soft. Add the chopped tomatoes and simmer gently for 20 mins
While the sauce is simmering, boil the spaghetti in plenty of salted water for the time stated on the pack or until just cooked. Drain and drizzle over a little more olive oil.
Stir the basil into the sauce, season with pepper and salt, if you want. Serve with the spaghetti and the Parmesan.
