History
Strawberries are native in many parts of the world, but did you actually know that they are a part of the rose family? Technically speaking, they are not a berry as it is aggregate accessory fruit, meaning that the main part of the fruit isn’t derived from plant ovaries. In a strawberries case, each seed is borne from one of the ovaries of the flower.
Storing strawberries
Strawberries stop ripening after they’ve been picked so choose firm, dark berries not ones with green and yellow patches. Depending on their firmness they will keep in the fridge for a couple of days. Give them a good wash before tucking in.
If you have some strawberries that you know you won’t eat in time, trim their stems off and place them sliced or whole in the freezer in an airtight container, they will last for around four months.
Growing them at home
Strawberries are relatively easy to grow at home, you can either grow them from seed or purchase a small plant from your local nursery. They prefer cooler climates so best planting season is Spring do they will be well-rooted by winter. In Australia, strawberries are most commonly grown in Toolangi, Stanthorpe and Tasmania where there is enough chill in the air.
