Try tequila in: Tequila & blood orange friands
Tequila may be most well known as a shot, but there are plenty of easy and delicious tequila cocktails that will earn you the title of best home bar tender. If you’re wondering what to mix with tequila, check out the recipe for one of these tasty cocktails below and head to the supermarket for the simple ingredients!
1. Margarita
Taste: The sweetness from the triple sec, the saltiness from the rim, the bitterness of the tequila and the sourness of the limes make for a perfectly balanced and iconic cocktail.
Best type of tequila to use: A silver or blanco tequila is best for margaritas as it has a strong, bold taste suited to mixing.
Ingredients: 30mL tequila, 15mL triple sec (Cointreau is a good choice), juice of two freshly squeezed limes and ice. Salt for the rim of the glass. Optional: add a splash of agave syrup for an extra hit of sweetness.
Method: Pour all the ingredients except for the salt into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously until slightly foamy and strain into a salt rimmed glass.

2. Tequila Sunrise
Taste: Transport yourself to an island with this tropical cocktail that looks just like the sun rising over the horizon. The base of this cocktail is orange juice and pomegranate flavoured grenadine and tequila gives it a nice cut through.
Best type of tequila to use: A gold tequila is best for a smooth taste, but a silver or blanco tequila will work for those that love tequila and want a strong taste.
Ingredients: 30mL tequila, 120mL pulp free orange juice, 15mL grenadine and ice.
Method: Place ice in the glass and layer tequila, then orange juice and finally pour the grenadine in the centre of the glass so it settles to the bottom and creates a ‘sunrise’.
3. Paloma
Taste: Fresh lime and a fizzy grapefruit soft drink make this a refreshing, light drink that’s perfect for a warm day.
Best type of tequila to use: A silver or blanco tequila is best for palomas.
Ingredients: 30mL tequila, 250mL grapefruit flavoured soft drink, a squeeze of fresh lime juice and ice. Optional: a salt rim also goes nicely with a paloma.
Method: Fill the salt rimmed glass with ice, add tequila and lime juice, then fill to the top with grapefruit soft drink.
4. Tequila Slammer
Taste: This is the easiest cocktail ever!
Best type of tequila to use: Any type of tequila! Pair darker tequilas with darker soft drinks (such as ginger ale), and blanco tequilas with lighter soft drinks (such as lemonade).
Ingredients: 30ml of tequila and 200mL of the soft drinks of your choice.
Method: Simply mix the tequila and soft drink together and you’re done. Optional: a garnish of dehydrated lime or orange, or a squeeze of fresh lime in the glass.
5. Tequila Spritzer
Taste: If you’re looking for a fresh, long cocktail that you can sip all afternoon, a tequila spritzer is versatile drink with wine that can be tailored to any taste. Our favourite flavours: rose and elderflower and moscato and lime.
Best type of tequila to use: A gold or Reposado tequila is best to give it a smooth finish.
Ingredients: 30mL tequila, 120mL wine of choice (when in doubt, choose a white wine), 15mL flavoured syrup (elderflower, blackberry and raspberry are all great choices), soda water and ice.
Method: Mix all ingredients together and fill to the top of a large glass with soda water. Optional: add garnishes such as a sprig of rosemary or fresh fruit.
