Why? Because ALDI will give you a box for you to carry your groceries home in for free.
"I often find myself stuck without a bag and always ask for a box,” said one shopper. “I actually prefer it - it’s easier to carry them to the car and into the house, and a lot less hassle than carrying heaps of bags.”
Boxes can easily be found around the store - or you can ask an ALDI staff member to bring one from the back for you. “It’s good for ALDI too because there’s no waste,” says the shopper.
2. You can often phone ahead and have items put aside for you.
If you’re desperate to hunt down items from their Special Buys catalogues, many stores and managers will put them on hold for you - especially if you are on good terms with the staff there.
"The other day I was desperate for some coat hangers that were in the Special Buys for the week, but had sold out at my local store," a shopper reveals. "So the manager of the store, who I've become friendly with, rang around some other locations and managed to track some down for me, which were then put on hold.
"You never know unless you ask!"
3. If you ask, they will open another register for you
There’s nothing worse than finishing your shop and realising there’s a super long queue at the front, with only one or two cashiers open. But one ALDI worker tells New Idea Food that it doesn’t have to be that way.
"Often we’re so busy at the cashiers, we don’t notice that the queue has grown," says the worker. "Customers are more than welcome to kindly ask the cashiers to open another till - if there’s a staff member free, we always will."
4. You can sometimes get a refund on a faulty item - even if you don’t have the receipt
While many stores demand proof of purchase and receipts on faulty or broken goods, ALDI can be a more accommodating.
"Because ALDI often have their own brands, I’ve always found that it’s easy for them to identify what is an ALDI product," says one ALDI shopper. "So they’re pretty good about offering refunds if something goes wrong.
"I bought a bar fridge from them about six months ago which just stopped working. I sent photos, because it was too heavy to take into store - and after they verified the fridge was from ALDI, they put the refund in my bank account that night and didn't make me haul the damaged fridge back to the store. I was so impressed."
On ALDI's website, they say: 'The best proof of purchase is a receipt. ALDI strongly advises you to make a copy of your receipt and keep it, and the original, in a safe place. Bank statement, warranty cards and credit card statements are also generally accepted providing the retail cost of the product can be proven.'
5. They have special extra large trolleys - just for you
If you’ve bought a large ‘Special Buys’ item that doesn't fit into a regular trolley, ALDI can give you a special ‘service trolley’ to help transport your item to the car.
Says ALDI: "When an item is over a certain weight, we will advertise the fact in our catalogue and encourage you to bring assistance to help carry the item out of the store. Each store is equipped with a trolley suitable for moving large objects which a Retail Assistant can provide to you." Awesome!
6. They will help you build ALDI furniture!
While ALDI is offering more and more furniture pieces for sale in the regular Special Buys, not everyone is as comfortable putting together flat-pack furniture as others. That’s why some managers might keep cards of local tradesmen and handymen who can help out. It’s worth asking your local ALDI for advice!
