The International Cake Show Australia has our leading cake chefs gearing up to compete for the title of Australian Haute Couture Wedding Cake Designer of the Year (that’s a mouthful!). So, if you’ve ever imagined yourself rocking up to the Oscars dressed in your fanciest dress with George Clooney on your arm, we’ve found an even better alternative.
Instead, you can rock up to the Australian Cake Oscars. Yes, they exist.
The Australian Cake Artists & Decorator’s Association Awards are the most prestigious awards in the Aussie cake decorating industry, and they’ll be announced on the night of the Royal Wedding.
The program, hosted from Friday 18th May to Sunday 20th May in Brisbane, will showcase a range of wedding cake designs – including the work of Australia’s top nine haute couture cake designers. Those nine designers (with enviable jobs) will also create a giant wedding cake between them. We can’t wait to see if they can top Claire Ptak’s Royal Wedding Cake.
The competition program sounds delightful, including “Garland or Floral Crown”, “Multi-Dimensional Cookies”, “ Enchanted Forest” and “Incredible Edible Art”.
There will be more than 54 free demonstrations, including wedding cake techniques, a hands-on cookie zone where you can decorate your own cookies, and how to create amazing sugar-modelled animals (to be honest, it sounds like it would be a struggle to eat those cuties). Also among the things to see and do are pop-up shops, a chocolate, sweet & party zone, and appearances from celebrity cake artists, chocolatiers, chefs and bakers.
Whether you go for the food or for the opportunity to schmooze with top figures in the cake industry (can we get taste-testing jobs, please?), Brisbane’s cake event seems like the place to be if Harry and Meghan’s wedding invite got lost in the mail. In fact, we might grab some of these plates and pretend we’re there!
