ALDI has announced a major change that will see three everyday items banned from shelves.
The radical move is part of the bargain supermarket’s pledge to cut a quarter of all its plastic packaging by 2025, meaning that many products will be affected.
But ALDI has also announced it will stop the sale of single-use plastics including plastic disposable tableware, plastic-stemmed cotton bugs and straws by 2020.
The supermarket said in a statement: ‘The above commitments will reduce ALDI’s reliance on plastic packaging, consequently leading to the reduction of waste going to landfill.'
Environmental groups have welcomed the move, with Australian Packaging Covenant chief executive Brooke Donnelly saying it makes ‘good business sense.’
‘[The announcement] demonstrates that sustainable packaging isn’t just good for the environment; it also makes good business sense and can drive a range of positive commercial benefits,’ she revealed in a statement.

‘It’s particularly impressive to see the process ALDI has undertaken to involve their suppliers; effectively bringing a range of businesses along on their sustainable packaging journey and delivering an efficient, cost effective approach to the entire supply chain.’
