Voicing her dismay over the situation on Coles’ Facebook page, Maryanne wrote: ‘Well done Coles. I have been scanning my Flybuys for years up to today and thought I will use some points to redeem the containers now on offer.
‘No points??? So I call the flybuys number to be told they "cancelled my flybuys due to inactivity 4 years ago and under the terms and conditions they don't advise you.”’
Explaining that the card continued to beep and make it seem like it was still active every time she used it, Maryanne said the cancellation had been a huge shock.
‘But the machines at the stores will register and beep when you scan but it does nothing ... so why would I think there was a problem,’ she asked?
She later added: ‘I have been scanning believing I am accumulating points however was never advised the card was cancelled.’
Coles were quick to respond to Maryanne’s complaint, saying they were sorry for her disappointment.
They wrote: ‘We're sorry to hear your frustrations. Please be aware, the barcode on a flybuys membership card will still scan at the register, as the system recognises the barcode. However, the system cannot distinguish if the account pertaining to the card is an active membership or not.’
After reading about Maryanne’s ordeal, one social media user wrote that they thought it was ‘disgusting’, voicing their support for Maryanne.
