The old ‘Snot Block’ vanilla slice has been an Australian classic for decades and decades.
But now it seems that a handful of Aussie bakeries are fighting it out for a bizarre honour when it comes to the iconic dessert - and you won’t believe what it is.
The battle for the TALLEST vanilla slice in the land is in full swing with several bakeries fighting hard for the title. We’ve noticed several cafes - which specialise in mega vanilla slices - getting taller and taller with the custard-filled desserts, with some towering to as high as 15 or 20cm.
Leading the pack is the MPH Cafe in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Owned by Australia’s best-looking baker, Nick - who went viral last year with his shirtless baking snaps - the cafe is known all across the land for their whopping, huge vanilla slices.
Hundreds of people drive to MPH specifically for their vanilla slices every week, making it a cult find amongst serious slice critics. ‘I dream of these vanillas slices every night,’ says one fan.
But now they’ve got competition from another Mornington Peninsula cafe, Mount Martha Fine Foods who also have a mega vanilla slice on the menu, with more than 10cm of fluffy custard.
Another Mornington Penisula eatery, The Red Hill Bakery also boasts an impressive version, with 10cm of custard goodness also.
And then there’s one more Victorian bakery, Just Fine Foods - which claims to be home to ‘Sorrento’s famous vanilla slice’. And there’s no doubting that their towering version of the slice looks pretty damn good.
Says one fan of the Just Fine Foods treat: ‘Best slice in the world - and the tallest!!’
Sydney cafe Saga has meanwhile taken the humble vanilla slice to an all-new level, with this 10cm-high fancy version. On the menu every weekend, it features ‘Caramelised puff, passionfruit gel, vanilla custard, fresh cream and passionfruit.’ Woah.
Says one fan: ‘Best vanilla slice ever. And I have had my fair share...’
But is it the tallest? The trend to have mega-high vanilla slices isn’t going away with bakeries going higher and higher with the baked treat. That only question we have is, how do you fit it in your mouth?!
