It’s fair to say Judy’s Markdown Addicts Australia followers were very impressed with the buy - but many agreed all those delicious Mars Bars and Twix wouldn’t last that long in their homes!
Said one: ‘My son would eat them in an hour, he’s a chocoholic!’ Another said: ‘1 week. I'd demolish the lot by myself 😂’
Added a third: ‘Not even a week in my house 😂😂😂 what a score though!’
As for why the choccies were so cheap, Judy says that the Mars Bar are 10 days past their best before date and the Twix bars expire on February 1.
And while it may be out of the question for some to eat food past their best before date, the CSIRO explains that there’s no health risk from eating them as such.
‘The term "Use by" is specifically for foods that will have a food safety risk after a specified storage period,’ they advise. ‘The term "Best before" applies to all other food products.’
In terms of chocolate, experts say there’s no risk of bacteria forming in the sweet as it doesn’t water - meaning the germs can’t survive. This means it’s safe to eat well past the best before date, and it’s just the taste of the chocolate that may be affected as time goes on.
But experts say that as long as the unopened chocolates are eaten between roughly four to six months after the best before date you should be good to go.
Happy days! And for more bargain finds, don’t forget to check out the Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook group here - you’ll love it!
