No-Meat May begins today, so whether you’ve been considering switching your diet to vegetarian or vegan, it’s time to start now! With the recent rise of vegan food and drinks including Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream range, the vegan burger renaissance that made it to the list of top 10 food trends of last year, and dairy-free iced coffee hitting refrigerators at your local Woolies, it comes as no surprise that four in five Aussies seek ethically-sourced food when dining out.
Opentable have shared their 5 top tips for participating in No Meat May:
1. Read the label
It’s the simplest way to confirm whether or not a product contains animal products without having to do a lot of research. While vegetarian products are more intuitive, most brands will declare if they are vegan on the packaging. Handy!
2. Fill up on fruits and vegies
Although veganism and vegetarianism may sound healthier, it can be easy to fall into unhealthy eating habits. If you stock up on fruit and veg, there will be plenty in the fridge to create home cooked meals packed with goodness. You can get some ideas in our easy vegetarian collection.
3. Don’t hold back on dining out
Finding vegan-friendly restaurants is now easier than ever, especially with OpenTable, an online restaurant reservation platform which also helps you find great dining options. We heard recently about Alibi in Woolloomoo which offers a completely plant-based menu, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Even our favourite dessert spot San Churro have also recently revealed their entire vegan menu. More options mean there’ll be no fussing about when you’re out with friends!
4. Experiment with new foods
If your usual weeknight meal is a go-to meat main with a side of vegies, don’t be afraid to branch out. Why not try curried corn, carrot and zucchini fritters or a vegan Americana salad?
5. Take it slow and keep learning
“Giving up foods you’ve loved your whole life can be difficult” – don’t get down on yourself if it’s hard at first. If you go slow, by the end of the month it’s possible to achieve your goal.
