The man, from Kentucky in the US, was fishing in a pond known to have large koi and goldfish when he realised he didn’t have any bait.
But instead of heading to the store, the man used the leftovers from his lunch as bait. Hunter had just eaten at US restaurant Lee’s Famous Recipe and still had a scone - or biscuit, as Americans call them - to eat, so use that as bait.
The result? Success!
But Hunter reveals that reeling in the 9kg monster fish was no easy task.
‘This fish was different. It was one of the hardest fighting fish I’ve ever fought. It never ever wanted to give up,’ he said.
‘But I did and I was screaming and jumping up and down as I had never seen anything like it.’
Hunter’s sister posted a photo of her brother with the mega goldfish, saying she couldn’t believe it.
‘What you are witnessing is NOT national geographic! It is not a stolen image or edited photo! This is my brother!! Who is holding what could possibly be…. that pet goldfish we flushed when I was 9!!!’ she wrote.
The good news is that Hunter released the giant goldfish back into the pond after taking the photograph - leaving him with one hell of a fishing story to tell.
