Kmart has been forced to pull a popular Christmas gift from shelves amid safety concerns.
The ATV Madness remote control quad bike has been taken off sale due to fears that some components could overheat and even catch on fire.
The move comes after Adelaide mum Samantha Sholly took to Facebook on Sunday to warn other parents after the quad bike’s charger burst into flames.
“WARNING! if anyone has bought this ATV from kmart, be very careful. We have had our charger catch on fire. LUCKY it was caught early!!’ she wrote online.
The mum said that her children were just metres from the charging device on Boxing Day when her sister smelt something burning.
“It was pretty scary – I’m just lucky my sister caught it when she did,” Ms Solly told The Age.
“If it happened when we weren’t here it would have been a whole different story.”
Another Aussie mum Cecily Sutherland had a similar experience, revealing that they could’ve lost their home if her partner not discovered the flaming charger.
“It was alight in the power point we just brought it back to Kmart and we were the 3rd customer this morning with the same complaint,” she wrote on Facebook.
As a result, Kmart has pulled the product from shelves and are now investigating what caused the problem.
‘At Kmart, we take the quality and safety of our products very seriously, which is why we made the decision to withdraw the remote control quad bike from sale, pending investigation from our quality team,’ a spokesperson told the ABC.
‘Kmart is committed to product and customer safety and we are working as quickly as possible to review and test this product.’
The spokesperson directed customers who had experienced issues to call their customer service team on 1800 124 125.
