Showing Mert Ney – reportedly an escaped mental patient – laying in the back of the van, he can be heard repeating the words Allahu Akbar, which means ‘God is great’ in Arabic.

‘God is the greatest, Allah is the only God,’ he is heard reciting. ‘He will protect me.’

Approaching the viewing slot at the back of the van, Mert is seen staring out, before uttering the words, ‘The government has failed me.’

The Joint Counter Terrorism Team have confirmed they will be looking into the case, with the man reportedly found with a USB containing materials related to recent mass shootings in New Zealand and the US. He is not believed to have any known ties with terrorist organisations.

It is reported that Ney, who has a history of mental issues, arrived at Blacktown hospital for treatment on August 7, but escaped from the ambulance. Police were informed and were believed to be seeking him.

One woman was confirmed stabbed in yesterday’s incident, with another woman found dead in a nearby apartment, her throat slashed. Police are in the process of confirming whether the fatality was a part of the same incident.

Vision captured at the scene shows the man on top of a car at a city intersection, waving a knife, before he falls to the ground as the car moves away. The driver of the car has spoken of his terror during the incident, fearing the man may have been packing a suicide bomb.

The suspect is later heard asking to be shot, before being detained by brave members of the public.

Police were despatched to King and Clarence Streets in the CBD, but members of the public detained the man ahead of their arrival.

He is expected to be charged today.
