Along with preserving, freezing is one of the easiest ways to extend the shelf-life of your food. But how long does your frozen food keep for? Here’s everything you need to know.

To make sure your food has a long shelf-life make sure any container you use is airtight. To cut down on your plastic use in the kitchen, try freezing your food in bread bags or glass jars (just make sure you don’t fill them above the lip).
Can you freeze cooked chicken?
Cooked chicken will last around one week in the fridge but in the freezer, it will last up to three months. To defrost your best option is to leave it in the fridge overnight as defrosting it at room temperature is a risky move.
Can you freeze salami?
Freezing salami gets the big tick of approval. Make sure you’ve wrapped it well to avoid any extra moisture or dryness spoiling the meat. If covered correctly it will last six weeks in the fridge and six months in the freezer.
Can you freeze sausage?
According to USDA FSIS, sausage can be frozen uncooked or ready to eat. Fresh sausage will keep for between one to two months whereas a cooked sausage will last between two to three.
Can you freeze pasta bake?
Cooked pasta bake will last between four to five days in the fridge but if you pop it in the freezer it can last up to two months. The main area for error comes when you start defrosting your pasta bake. Defrost your pasta bake in the fridge overnight ensuring that it has defrosted completely before reheating it in the oven, place a sheet of alfoil over the top to prevent the top from burning.
Can you freeze pasta?
Freezing pasta and your sauce separately will give you the best results. Plain pasta can be frozen for around one month, for the best results cook it just less than al dente so it doesn’t turn mushy.
Can you freeze cooked meat?
There’s no need to discard your delicious roasted and cooked meats, extend their shelf life by popping them in the fridge in an air-tight container for up to three months. Make sure it has cooled before room temperature before freezing as freezing it from hot to frozen will create too much condensation.
Can you freeze cooked vegetables?
When it comes to freezing vegetables, the best option is to blanch them (boiled or steamed for a short time) before they are frozen. Blanching stops enzyme actions which can lead to loss of flavour and compromised colour and texture. It also cleanses the surface of dirt and organisms.
Whilst you can freeze veggies like capsicum and zucchini after they’ve been roasted for best results stick with raw or blanched.
Can you freeze cooked rice?
Freezing cooked rice is an absolute time-saver. Freeze rice in individual portions so it is easy to use when you need it, slow defrosting isn’t recommended as it will go soggy so just take it straight out of the freezer and into the pan or microwave. You can freeze rice for up to one month.
