A Melbourne man has been fined more than $300 after he donated a box of books to a local charity shop.
The local council used CCTV footage to track down 78-year-old Dan Alessio after he left the items outside a Salvos Store in the city's northeast.
A month later, he received a fine of $322.38 for littering.
"My only mistake was not to bring it in when the shop was open," he told the Northcote Leader.
"I should have thrown it in the bin."
The council says there are clear signs outside charity stores to ask people not to dump items.
