Do you ever get the feeling that all some people have to do to win is just turn up?
That’s the impression that may be haunting you right now if you watched last night’s penultimate episode of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, which saw Shannon Noll and Danny Green named as finalists, along with the amazing and talented Fiona O’Loughlin.
Longtime viewers of the show will have noticed a certain pattern emerging, after previous seasons were won by blokey-blokes Freddie Flintoff and Brendan Fevola. Yes, there was the year that Casey Donovan surprised everyone by spoiling the monotony, but don’t assume the pleasant surprises will naturally continue.
Look, Shannon Noll seems to be a perfectly lovely man, but what exactly has he done to make the show interesting or memorable? For most of the episodes he’s just been inoffensive – and often inactive – set dressing.
And while Danny Green had a certain utility making Anthony Mundine feel uncomfortable, that fun petered out very quickly when ‘The Man’ packed his bags.
Fiona, on the other hand, has been consistently engaging – hilarious and moving, as she’s shared some very personal details about her struggles with alcohol. Her fun chemistry with Peter Rowsthorn also kept things lively, and then there was that rendition of Danny Boy.
I struggle to remember anything interesting that the other two have done during the whole run of the show. Blending into the jungle undergrowth while other people make us laugh, cry or sit up and take notice shouldn’t be the criteria for making it to the finals.
And neither should being a certain type of man.
Please, let’s make Fiona the winner – because of what she’s done and achieved. That’s the number one reason anyone should be rewarded.
