‘I was just getting milk and walked by and thought that's a tad pricey so I bought it then took to front counter and and they refunded me the whole amount. Glad they refunded me would have been expensive meal!’
Darren says this is the first time he’s done something like this, going on to reveal that the leg of lamb weighed 2.5kg, meaning he picked up the $30 meat for absolutely nothing.
‘First time I've come across it thought see what happens!’ he said. ‘There is a code of practice in Australia about prices when scanned wrong.’
Other savvy shoppers on the Markdown Addicts Australia group said they often keep an eye out for mispriced meats, saying they can often be weighed incorrectly.
‘I look for over weight meat as well,’ said one follower. ‘And just weigh it in fruit and veg [to see if it’s the right weight]. It happens a lot with chops.’
She adds: ‘I have picked up chops they want you to pay for 1.25 kgs and its only 800gms ... I buy the item, then go to the counter for refund and it’s free. Used to work in deli and have a good eye for weights of meat. It happens at our local Woolies, [but] never at Coles so far.’
But checking for incorrectly priced meats hasn’t occurred to some followers, who are now pledging to keep an eye out for it in future!
‘I’ve never thought to look for meat that isn’t the right weight,’ one wrote. ‘I will def be checking now enjoy!’
